What is Shweshwe fabric?

Shweshwe or shwe-shwe is a printed fabric traditionally dyed indigo blue with white distinctive geometric prints. The original Shweshwe has a "Three Cats" logo printed on the back of the fabric.

Are Minilu Kids dresses traditional dress?

No - Minilu Kids clothing aren't traditional garments. We use genuine Shweshwe, a traditional South African fabric, but cut and style it into modern, everyday clothing for children and women. Think contemporary dresses, overalls and play-friendly pieces made from a fabric with deep heritage roots - no replicas of the traditional dress.

Is Shweshwe clothing handmade or machine-made?

Every Minilu Kids piece is handmade by me - I do the cutting, sewing and finishing of each garment myself in small batches as per order. Nothing is mass-produced, that is why you will find variations in the composition of the design in the same dress and same colour. It is unlikely that two dresses will be exactly the same.

Can I choose my own colour and design?

Feel free to choose your preferred color and print design, and if it’s available, I’ll be happy to make it happen. I’ve included a “Customer Notes” section for details like color, dress length, or pants length.

How do I care for/wash Shweshwe garments?

Wash Shweshwe garments preferably in cold water and turn them inside out first to protect the print. Do not use fabric softener. It is bad for the garment, and it is bad for the environment. Do not bleach. Avoid tumble drying. Line dry in the shade to keep colours rich for years to come. You will be surprised as to how quickly your Shweshwe garment dries. Iron on the inside, if necessary. The fabric will darken but will return to normal colour once the garment has cooled down.

Why does Shweshwe fabric feel stiff at first?

Genuine Shweshwe is treated with a starch-like finish during production, which gives it that crisp, structured feel when new. But I prewashed every piece of Shweshwe fabric before my cutting even begins, and it will soften beautifully with each wash.

What sizes does Minilu Kids make?

Minilu Kids makes clothing for children aged 2 to 12 years, with a few pieces for younger kids, mostly in the rompers and dungarees section. There are also a few dresses available for 14-year-olds.

How do I know which size to order for my child?

Check the size chart on each product page, focusing mainly on chest and height measurements. If your child falls between sizes or you’re unsure, feel free to email me—I’m happy to help you choose. The garment descriptions can also guide your decision. Since I use patterns from various designers, measurements may vary.

Do you make matching sibling sets?

Yes, several of our Shweshwe styles are designed as matching or coordinating sets for siblings, friends, or moms and kids. You’re free to choose the print and colourway, and each piece is made to order.

How long does it take from placing an order to receiving the parcel?

I usually start cutting the same day if I have the fabric on hand, and since the Da Gama Shop is just around the corner, it’s convenient. First, the fabric is washed and dried. For one or two pieces, the parcel is dispatched within two days. Delivery time depends on your location and how quickly The Courier Guy can get to you, but it’s usually within 3 to 5 days. For larger orders, production takes about a day per garment, with delivery time added on top.

And an urgent order?

Until now, I’ve managed to speed up production by starting very early in the morning or working late into the night and even fitting urgent orders in between others, so customers received them on time. Customers also made use of overnight courier services.
